Catholic:Catholic is a term that is often misunderstood, and needs careful definition. In the Nicene Creed, we declare: "We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church." What confuses many people is that both Protestants and "Catholics" say this same creed. Even the Eastern Orthodox church recites these words. How can that be? The confusion is because the term "catholic" and "Roman Catholic" are often used interchangeably - the first is a kind of shorthand for the second. But "catholic" by itself simply means "universal" or "worldwide." The term "Roman Catholic" means "the worldwide church headquartered in Rome." It refers to that specific, worldwide denomination, with a Pope, cardinals, bishops, priests and nuns. But the word "catholic" by itself does NOT refer to this denomination. It is used simply to indicate that the Christian church - regardless of denomination - is a universal, worldwide church. So, Resurrection is not a Roman Catholic church. It is an Anglican Church (that is, our denomination has its origins in England), and we have sister churches all over the world. We are first of all Christians, secondly Anglicans. "Episcopal" is the word commonly used to refer to the American branch of the Anglican church. Our worship services follow a form from the Book of Common Prayer. To some people this order of service looks similar to the service in a Roman Catholic church, but that is simply because we draw our order of service from the very earliest Christian churches, nearly 2000 years ago. We invite you to come and experience worship with us, in a tradition as old as the church, and as vibrant as new life in the Spring.
